Colgate offers head start on college careers
March 15, 2012

Where do you see yourself in four months? It’s summertime, school is out, books are put away and before you know it, boredom sets in. If you’re a student-athlete, you might be starting to think about your future – what you’ll do after high school; if, and where you’ll go to college, and what it takes to play sports at the “next level.”

For soccer players, summer typically means playing club soccer. And for the more serious athletes, it’s also a time to dream about playing in college. Most of us, though, haven’t a clue about where or how to explore the possibilities.

Erik Ronning understands this challenge. As head coach of the men’s soccer program at Colgate University, Ronning knows that athletes need both high-level training and, just as important, face-to-face contact with coaches who have real-world recruiting experience. That’s why he spends his summers hosting high school players at his Northeast Elite ID Camp where they train and interact with coaches from colleges throughout the Northeast. At Northeast Elite ID Camp, coaches offer elite training as well as insight into the process of pursuing play at the collegiate level.

So what exactly is the Northeast Elite ID Camp? It’s a soccer camp open to boys entering or graduating from high school (grades 9-12). Taking place from July 9-12, Ronning describes the four day camp – held on the Colgate campus in the rural village of Hamilton, New York — as “physically demanding, very competitive, and developmentally oriented.”

“It’s the perfect training environment for aspiring college soccer players,” he said. “Our coaching staff will train the players as if they were their own collegiate athletes, and put them in situations that will not only make them better, but also prepare them for the next level.”

The Northeast Elite ID Camp offers a unique experience that goes well beyond just athletic training. Players get a feel for what it’s like to play at the college level. Not only that, but they also get the chance to connect (or “network”) with coaches that understand how to help them play at the higher level. According to Ronning, “The coaching staff will be evaluating and recruiting players at the camp,” and it’s not uncommon for attending players to end up playing collegiate soccer.

As high school student-athletes, players are undoubtedly thinking about college. Spending four days and nights on a university campus is just the experience that helps prospective student-athletes get a feel for their future.
