After the U.S. Men’s National Team failed to qualify for the World Cup for the time since 1986 with last year’s heart-breaking loss to Trinidad and Tobago, interim head coach Dave Sarachan appears to understand that it is time for the next generation of talent.

At least for now, there is no more Tim Howard, Michael Bradley and the other national team regulars from the last decade. That was underlined by the weekend’s roster announcement of a 22-player squad for upcoming friendlies against Bolivia, Ireland and France. Changes are expected for the two matches in Europe, though for now, a younger group is slated to take the field on Monday against the South American side.

Most of the roster is comprised of U.S. youth national team veterans who have been the standouts for their respective age groups. The main headline is the return of the Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic, though other up-and-comers include Werder Bremen’s Josh Sargent and Manchester United’s Matthew Olosunde.

Here are a few thoughts on the roster and how things could play out on the field:

Midfield Maestros anticipate their first games together

Since the disastrous result in October, American fans have been waiting to see Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie play together. After both breaking out n the Bundesliga and battling it out as rivals, they will now have the opportunity to play side-by-side for their national team. Both players have supreme ball skills, athleticism and vision. Combine that with chemistry between the two and they can potentially be the most dominant midfield this country has ever seen. It up to Sarachan and his staff to put the pair in the right system so they can thrive together. This is just the beginning of a midfield dynasty and should have fans excited for what’s to come.

A squad that underlines youth

Besides Bill Hamid and a couple of other veteran defenders, most of the squad is of or below the age of 22. This bodes well for the type of players and the brand of soccer that Sarachan wants his team to play. The youthful energy and positive vibes that his players have shown in the past friendlies allowed them to play care-free which brought out the best in them. Furthermore, these friendlies allows this young group to gel early and often knowing that they are a ways away from their next major international tournament.

Youthful but experienced

Many of the players called in are playing meaningful minutes at their respective clubs at a young age. Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie were regular contributors for Borussia Dortmund and Schalke respectively and have recently secured places in next year’s Champions League. Tim Weah has seen time with Ligue 1 champions Paris St. Germaine and started their final game of the season against Caen this past weekend. Matt Miazga appeared in 33 matches for the Netherland club Vitesse and scored an important goal against Utrecht. This is something we haven’t seen in recent history from young American players. Sarachan can count on these players who are in peak fitness and have experience playing week in and week out.
