The TeamRank National Championship is a unique rankings setup that only includes team performance from the current season. It begins with events in August and ends with final events in July, at which point a new competition begins and the slate is again wiped clean. Each ranking is only for that August to July season.

Some regions have the luxury of playing soccer year-round, however there are others in the country where that is impossible due to the harsh winters. However, that hasn’t depleted the morale of Albertson SC currently sitting at the top of the U16 Girls New York TeamRank.

“I think the team itself is one of the hardest working teams that I have been with,” Head Coach Michael Demakis said. “These girls train four or five times a week. They train in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter. It doesn’t matter the weather; they are training. I think the progression and where these girls are today is because they put themselves through the course of hard training

Because Albertson SC has committed to a philosophy of playing for each other, it is able to perform as a cohesive unit.

“Every single player puts her heart and soul into the team,” Demakis said “We move as a unit offensively, and defensively. We look out for each other, and to be able to do that, everyone must be on the same page. The girls do an excellent job of understanding their role on the team and perform to the best of their ability.”

Some of those leaders on the team are Krystina Iordanou, Sasha Gray, and Amanda Rooney.

Iordanou is a phenomenal defender, and one of the best in the region, according to Demakis. Standing at 5’10”, she is big and strong, but also carries amazing speed. She is amazing in the air and a great 1v1 defender.

In the offensive third stands Gray. She has deceptive speed that opponents take for granted until they get out-paced. She has great ball skills, but most importantly is patient at front of the net.

The glue of Albertsons SC would be Rooney. She’s a midfielder that Demakis assures one can build a team around.

“Amanda is the leader of the team, and can take over a game by herself,” he said. “She can score with both feet and is an excellent defender. She is the real deal, and she goes as we go.”

Having the top talent isn’t make any use unless the team is playing. And Albertson SC will have to wait until April to face off in top-flight competition again. For now it’s the coaching staff’s task to continue keeping the intensity in practice and in scrimmages to avoid any drop off in the team’s performance.

“If you keep the environment the same and keep that competitive hunger, it doesn’t really cause the players to get any lulls,” said Demakis. “They don’t lose that fitness or the focus, because once they are done with one event, they just concentrate on the next.”

Other teams that lead the pack are the U13 Massapequa SC, U14 Farmingdale United, 15 Albertson SC, U17 Buffalo Soccer Academy, and U18 Syosset SC.

On the boys’ side New York TeamRank has U13 Clarkstown SC, U14 Ramapo Valley SC, U15 New York SC, U16 Albertsons SC, U17 Commack SC, and U18 JBS FC Premier leading their respective age groups.
