Disney Boys Showcase finals bring excitement

Disney Boys Showcase finals bring excitement
December 31, 2010
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — On championship Thursday, there was plenty of excitement to go around.

In the 1994 Academy Division – Blue, the Dallas Texans Academy marched away with a 2-0 victory over Baltimore Bays Chelsea Academy.

Baltimore may have been the more fluid of the two squads, but it was the Texans that found a way to place the ball in the back of the net.

Dallas’ Christian Soldat stunned the opposition when he found space in the box and netted a goal in the 12th minute of the match. Much of the Dallas offense was based on the counter-attack.

For much of the game, Baltimore attacked the Dallas backline but failed to create challenges inside the box. At times, their players were on their mark.

Hanging onto a 1-0 lead, Dallas extended it in the 63rd minute with a screamer from Taylor Curtis-Wheeler.

Even though they trailed 2-0 late in the match, Baltimore continued to push, eagerly looking to get on the scoreboard.

Baltimore Bays Chelsea Academy:

John Jlopleh positioned himself early in the contest. Within minutes of the first whistle he had some great one-touch passes into the box.

James O’Connor placed some well-timed crosses into the box, helping create opportunities Baltimore score a goal.

Tanner Vosvick provided some dangerous free kicks in the game and when Dallas was able to mount a counter-attack, he was there to help break it up.

Dallas Texans Academy:

Christian Soldat not only scored the game’s first goal with a well-timed shot but he was also helped defend well against the Baltimore attack.

Anthony Pagano was involved in a string of Baltimore offensive attacks, and several times was able to knock the ball out of the box, ending any chance of a score.

Kevin Wright, as goalkeeper, made some great saves. In several instances, he was able to get a hand on the ball and deflect it just over the cross bar.

Concorde’s comeback leads to win in penalty kicks:

Concorde Fire Elite trailed by a score of 2-0 before making a comeback and winning the U15 Showcase in dramatic fashion.

Following two scoreless periods of extra time, Concorde’s (Georgia) Adam Sheikali made the game-clinching penalty in the fifth set, giving Concorde a 5-4 edge in the shootout.

The advantage in the early part went to Solar (Texas), who kept the ball on the Concorde side of the field.

In the second period, Concorde changed their strategy and went seeking an equalizer as they trailed 1-0.

Things got more difficult when Solar added a second goal in the 58th minute, but a strike from Jack Gayton in the 64th gave Concorde a chance.

After many shots at the Solar goal, Adam Sheikali booted one from outside the box to tie the game in the final minute before stoppage time, bringing an uproar from both the players and the fans in attendance.

Both teams converted their first three kicks, but then goalkeeper Ever Estrada’s attempt was blocked in the fourth frame.

Landon Barrow and Sheikali’s kicks completed the comeback.

Concorde Fire Elite:

Jack Gayton was all over the field. On defense he was kicking possessions out Concorde’s territory and scored the team’s first goal.

Trey Blasingame also played two-way soccer, helping out the club when they needed somebody to push the ball forward. On defense, he was able to protect his wing.

Julio Jimenez had a terrific shot early in the first period that missed going in by inches, deflecting off of the cross bar and out of play. He played many through balls in the second half, attempting to set up scoring opportunities.

Solar 96:

Yannick Kofi was a threat every time he touched the ball. He created many opportunities with his dribbling.

Toryima Asom helped Kofi by serving him the ball and also creating breakaways on his own with his touch. He had some shots inside the box.

Blake Stricker pushed the ball forward and contributed heavily on the wing. Stricker’s crosses placed the ball in the box and were a danger to Concorde’s comeback.
