Sunday brought more league play from the Elite Clubs National League, as the top-flight girls’ league continued front and center at the PDA Memorial Day Showcase.

U17 PDA Charge vs. San Diego Surf

The PDA versus Surf match up ended in a scoreless tie where each team had their share of opportunities, but in the end remained without a score. The first half went back and forth on both ends of the field. PDA had slightly more control of the first half and put Surf on the defense quite often. The second half’s play was in favor of Surf, but PDA was anchored by defenders Kristen MCNabb and Carly Black. Harlee Leineek in goal for PDA came up big numerous times for her squad as well. In the first half PDA got in deep in Surf’s territory when Catherine Zimmerman found Nicole Driesse; however Driesse’s shot found Surf’s goalkeeper, Ari Zargarian’s hands. The first half was very much a physical battle where both clubs tried to one up the other. Surf’s Katie Perry was very active up top and found openings for shot attempts, but could not find the back of the net. A few of her shots from about  yards out were great strikes on goal but Leineek shut her down.

The second half Surf began to settle in and move the ball much more causing problems for PDA. A few times Surf got in behind PDA’s defense but McNabb was able to cover ground or right behind her was Leineek. The save of the game came midway through the second half when Surf played a ball across the goal mouth and found Allie Bailey, but Leineek slid across the goal and smothered the ball before it made it into the net. PDA had one more great opportunity late in the second half when Surf goalkeeper mishit a ball which landed in front of PDA striker Jessica Jankowski who hit her shot wide of the net. The game ended in a tie with both teams fighting until the last minute.
U17 Sereno SC vs. Minnesota Thunder

Minnesota was able to take advantage of Sereno’s offside trap to the tune of a 6-0 victory for the Thunder. Minnesota’s dominating forward Jenna Roering had a hat trick on the day. It began in the first half when she was put through on two breakaways where she was able to capitalize on both opportunities. A few times the trap worked and Roering was called off side, but she was continuously running at Sereno’s goalkeeper. In the beginning of the first half Sereno was getting decent looks on Minnesota’s goal. The difference between their opportunities and Minnesota was Minnesota found them in behind Sereno’s defense, whereas Sereno was forced to settle for far out shots. Minnesota’s third goal came when a cross was played to Mackenzie Lewis in the middle of the box and placed it into the net. The fourth goal was a penalty kick. Mallory Getchell got fouled inside the box and Rebecca Roberts connected on the kick.

The second half was a dominating effort by Minnesota. Two more goals were scored in this half. Sereno continued to play an offside trap which resulted in these goals. The fifth goal occurred when Mallory Getchell got in deep and played a ball across to Hannah Werth who had a nice finish. The final goal was yet another breakaway by Jenna Roering. No one could catch up to Roering and she placed her shot in the back of the net. The match ended in a six nothing dominating victory for Minnesota.
