Glory pulls off double titles in ECNL & USYS
August 9, 2010
The Dallas Sting has a wall of fame, of sorts. It’s a commemorative collection at the club’s facility that connects all of the past champions in their youthful glory.

While there are plenty of great names and teams to choose from among the mounted, there is one connection that runs deeper than all the others.

It’s between a pair of 2007 and 2010 USYS National Champions. But the duo share much more than that.

Hayley and Glory Williams are bonded by household and DNA. The sister team is three years apart but eternally together.

And it’s their knack for mimicking each other’s achievements that has worked in the favor of the Sting – with Hayley delivering a U14 title in 2007 and Glory following it up with a U15 championship last week.

Hayley was first, and she’s quick to remind Glory of as much. She’s a little older and a little taller (6-foot). She joined the Sting two years prior to Glory causing the little sister to mouth those words every two-child parent has heard at one time or another:

“I want to do it too!”

So Glory did do it. And when older sister Hayley, a defensive midfielder, guided her team to the USYS national championship in 07, her little sister and No. 1 tab keeper was there to watch it.

“It was in Dallas and we all went to the game,” Glory said. “I wanted to be her so bad. The crowd was so big that it gave me goose bumps. I thought, ‘I can’t wait until it’s me playing in the final game.’”

Her time would come three years later, but first she would observe the qualities that have made Hayley such a special player.

“She was always the biggest leader on her team – her nickname was ‘mama bear,’ ” Glory said. “Just the way she treats her teammates and always looked out for them. I always admired that.”

Hayley isn’t quite ready to take credit for Glory’s intangibles.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily me that she has taken after,” said Hayley, headed to play soccer at Rice in a matter of days. “Our mom (Donna) was a really good athlete (attended college in Alabama on a basketball scholarship) so she definitely got a lot from our parents. She has a lot of comparable demeanor but she is better than me in terms of physical abilities. She’s better technically, and very clever with the ball – which I definitely am not.”

Glory’s creativity with the ball helped her to one-up her big sis. Not only did she capture the USYS title with the Sting, but it came just days – and miles of quick travel – after guiding the Sting to an ECNL title in Redmond, Washington, alongside teammates Miranda Larkin, Morgan Williams, Caity Heap, Katelyn Mountjoy and Maddy Crabtree, among others.

“I am truly proud of her – it says so much that she was able to go from one tournament to the next and win. It’s such a testament to her character and mental strength,” Hayley said. “When we were younger and we would both earn achievements every once in a while I would tell her, ‘that wasn’t that good.’ ”

But not this time. This time it’s good enough to serve as another victory for the whole Williams family.
