PDA wins U15 & U16 title, FC DELCO win U17
May 26, 2009

ZAREPHATH, NEW JERSEY – Home cooking carried the final day of the final Red Bull National League weekend here, with host club PDA capturing the U15 and U16 championships while Philadelphia-area side FC DELCO won the U17 title.

Red Bull has actually not been sponsoring the league and the weekend was dominated by proceedings for the new Elite Clubs National League, which will officially begin in August. While club directors held multiple meetings to continue sorting the details of that competition, teams in three age groups competed in tiered brackets, with the top eight from previous Red Bull weekends squaring off to determine a champion. The final group matches were played Monday morning and the winners of the four-team groups played early Monday afternoon in title bouts.

Following are details of those games, a few other notes from Monday action and complete results from the day.

U17 Final: FC DELCO 2, Sting Dallas 1

This match had a little bit of everything. DELCO’s Rebecca Sparks scored the opener with a 1st-half header. In the closing minutes of regulation, Lauren Byers scored a dramatic equalizer for Kenny Medina’s Sting squad.

Sting got a bad break in overtime however when standout goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein suffered a head injury and had to be replaced by a field player. In the 2nd session, DELCO’s Natasha Prentice scored on a shot from the right to lift her squad to A 2-1 win and the U17 title.

Prentice said afterward the team stayed focused despite the letdown of surrendering a late equalizer. She added that it didn’t change strategy about attacking after the Sting goalkeeper change, but continued looking to put shots in on net.

U16 Final: PDA Tsunami 3, Stars of Massachusetts 1

Stars’ Hayley Brock continued her scoring spree with a 1st half opener, but PDA’s Stefanie Scholz drew her side level.

Stephanie McCaffrey put in some good work in the forward third for Stars while Amanda Gerlitz continued her good defensive play.

PDA goalkeeper Lauren Viverito made some good stops to keep the match level and then early in the 2nd half the New Jersey side, with Tom Anderson filling in for regular coach Chris Gould on the weekend, hit Stars with a double strike. Danielle Colaprico, excellent all weekend, scored from a scramble to make it 2-1, and then Scholz won a ball on the right and sent it to Daphne Corboz who made it 3-1.

While Stars had qualified for the final on Sunday, PDA had needed the right combination of events in the final group matches Monday morning to get in. Colaprico had iced a 2-0 victory over Ohio Premier with a sizzling run down the left and good centering pass for Kaitlyn DeTuro who knocked it home. Kyarah Foushee and Jessica Musmanno were very influential for PDA in the morning match as well. The result wouldn’t have been enough without Mustang SC drawing 3-3 with Slammers on the next field over behind a late tying goal from Chrisalyn Garingan.

U15 Final: PDA Charge 2, Crossfire Premier 1

Crossfire went up in the 1st half when Katie Ryan’s shot was saved by PDA goalkeeper Lisa Capelli but Rachel Herron raced in to knock home the rebound. PDA’s Catherine Zimmerman had a volley from a Corey Delaney cross go just wide and the teams went to the break at 1-0.

Cassandra Inacio went close for PDA in the 2nd half but Crossfire’s Justine Ponton made a good save. The lead held up until an unlikely own goal leveled the score. Inaction set up Stephanie Campo for a late chance but Ponton made the save again and the match went to overtime.

In the extra session, Rachel Cole scored the winner to lift Mike O’Neill’s team to the title.

Other Notes from morning matches:

  • Ohio Premier’s U16 defender Olivia Evans covers a lot of ground, makes good reads and deals with the ball well after winning it.
  • PDA’s Kyarah Foushee (KiKi) has exceptional acceleration.
  • Mustang’s Stanford-bound U16 player Natalie Griffen gets forward consistently and is a good crosser of the ball.
  • Slammers’ defender Kassiday Hause is a steadying influence in the back.
  • Slammers’ Scarlett Fallon is a good 1v1 defender and also distributes well.
  • Slammers club manager Jo Ann Bak, who will hate being mentioned here, is a tremendous ambassador for the club, helping all team members immensely with her tireless efforts to publicize their efforts and helping college coaches know what they need to as they make decision on scouting and recruiting.
  • FC Milwaukee’s Emily Jacobson scored a good free kick goal in a 5-2 loss to Colorado Storm Copa’s U17 side.
  • Colorado forward Kristen Hamilton, a Colorado Buffaloes recruit, continued her very good play here with a pair of goals.
  • I saw a player who I will show kindness to by not naming, check to see if the referee was watching, then turn and spit at another player. Very classy.
