Stars emerge at Super Y/TDS regional event

August 26, 2015

Super Y and TopDrawerSoccer descended upon Fort Wayne, Ind., and the beautiful facility at The Plex for the first annual installment of the Super Y Regional Scouting Series. The event was attended by hundreds of the best Super Y players from throughout Region II. It even had an international flair as players from Toronto made the trip to be pitted against the best from Region II.

Throughout the three-day event, players competed in multiple full-field games, coached by the highest quality Super Y coaches from throughout the region. The talent displayed at the youth ranks, including U12 and U14 players showed the depth and importance that the USL Super Y league is placing on young players.

The highlight of the weekend is the final All-Star games. The girls combined U13/14 and U16 to create a fast-paced match. Team “White” prevailed 5-1 through the leadership of Audrey Haines and Kylie Gierach. The U13/14 boys game was a tightly fought affair, with goalkeepers Brooks Thompson and Jared Scarlett running the show. To cap the weekend, Boys U16 All-Star teams “Red” and “White” battled through regulation and had to be decided by PKs. After a grueling 12 rounds where players put on a clinic in finishing, team “Red” won thanks to a big save by goalkeeper Joshua Stephens.

Top girls that were noticed during the combine by our staff and coaches include powerful forward Jordan Roderick-Fried and midfielder Alexis Finazzo. Roderick-Fried has the makings of a top player if she continues her progression. She has speed, skill, power, and an innate ability to get the ball in the back of the net. Finazzo is a smart, clean player who reads the game very well and was a constant threat from her midfield role.

Some of the top boys made their presence known at both the Combine on Saturday and the All-Star games on Sunday. Micha Cross (U13/14) was the standout player throughout the weekend in every game he played. Cross is great in any attacking role and can be a DI talent if he continues to progress. Another standout player was midfielder Ian Otter. Otter had a great weekend where he displayed his versatility by leading the line, playing underneath a forward, and even playing through the midfield. Otter’s shining moment came in a full-field game during the combine when he struck a beautiful free kick to the upper 90.

On Saturday, the U13-U16 players participated in a TDS Combine. College coaches were in attendance and they were not disappointed. Coaches from DII, DIII, NAIA and NJCAA worked with a wide array of boys and girls who can grow into great additions to their program in the coming years. The combine mixed the U13-U16 players in groups that allowed players to test themselves against different levels of opposition.

Sunday was an opportunity for all players to get more field time in front of college coaches and work with the cream of the crop of Super Y coaches. The morning games were highly competitive as every player was hoping to get one last quality outing ahead of the All-Star games. Play was fast and fluid as the players began to get more comfortable with their new teammates and their surroundings. Young players such as Samiya Begheri, Robert Nystrom and Brooks Thompson put in quality performances that turned the heads of the men’s coaches in attendance. Some of the girls that had great morning games include Mara Faiazzo, Farrah Simpson and Anne Major.

These players are just a small taste of what the Super Y Region II Regional Scouting Series had to offer. Keep an eye out for our Best XI’s on both the boys and girls players from Region II for an in-depth look at the standout players from the weekend.
