Top goalkeeper gains secret advantage
September 15, 2011
Olivia Liebman finds an advantage over her competition through her preparation.
“My parents have always told me that ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard, and that talent that works hard is unbeatable,’ ” Liebman explains.
Her philosophy has proven vital during her successful club career as the goalkeeper for Lonestar SC, and now it will take her beyond.
“I think it’s the perfect fit for me,” said Liebman, of Vanderbilt. It was my dream school. “While there were other schools that expressed a lot of interest in me, (Vanderbilt) was the only school I really wanted to go to.”
And what Liebman wants, she usually gets. The No. 34 player in our 2013 class Top 100, she is known for her technical ability and commanding presence for her ECNL squad. She stands 5-foot-8, but makes great use of her body with good positioning and quick decision making.
She’s a confident player who knows what makes her special.
“I think I am one of the best keepers in my class because I have been coached to out-prepare and outthink my competition,” Liebman said. “All of us keepers can jump and dive and kick. My advantage is that I am totally prepared when the game begins and I am very unemotional and businesslike in the net.”
