U17 MNT drops 4-1 result to Sporting KC

March 1, 2012

Sporting Kansas City recorded a 4-1 victory on Thursday in a pre-season exhibition against the United States Under-17 National Team at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Sporting KC striker and SuperElite tour alum Soony Saad scored twice in a three-minute span during the second half to lead Sporting past Richie Wiliams' residency squad.

Midfielder Konrad Warzycha opened the scoring for Sporting Kansas City in the sixth minute. Luke Sassano worked his way through the midfield and played a pass to trialist Mozzi Gyorio on the right side of the penalty area. The Canadian's cross found Warzycha waiting at the back post and the second-year pro placed his header past the keeper for an early 1-0 lead.

The Under-17's did well to even the score in the 14th minute after being awarded an indirect free kick at the top of the six-yard box when goalkeeper Steve Spangler picked up what was ruled to be an intentional backpass from Korede Aiyegbusi. Junior Flores touched the set piece to Rubio Rubin, who powered his shot high over the gathering of players on the goalline and beneath the crossbar.

Former Sporting Kansas City Juniors player Kyle Miller notched the match-winner in the 50th minute. Dom Dwyer and Gyorio combined at the top of the penalty area to attract the attention of the U17 defense, allowing Miller to to find space on the right side of the penalty area and the Rockhurst alum slotted his shot inside the far post.

From there, Saad sealed the victory with goals in the 64th and 67th minutes. His first came on an individual effort, forcing a turnover with high pressure and then taking the necessary touches before bending his effort around the keeper. Less than three minutes later, Saad fed Shawn Singh inside the penalty area where he was promptly tripped up by Conor Donovan. Saad converted the ensuing penalty kick with a well-taken shot from the spot as the keeper guessed the opposite direction.
