U17 PDA takes two division titles with one win
June 1, 2010

ZAREPHATH, New Jersey - The stakes were high Monday during the final day of the PDA Invitational Girls College Showcase.

While some punched their ticket to the ECNL Nationals, others simply had to settle for the accomplishment of coming out on top during one prestigious weekend.

U17 PDA Tsunami 4, Neusport FC 0

In one impressive fell swoop, PDA not only captured its home showcase but also clinched the top overall spot in the ECNL challenge A division.

The Tsunami capped what was a strong weekend for the home club overall - the U16 Charge finished second behind the Challenge A winning Crossfire Premier.

Jordan Downs added a goal during the rout for the 17s who took apart a tough-spirited Neusport Group.

One of the great subplots of the match was watching Neusport defender Lexa Green battle it out with striker Jessica Musmanno. Both are athletic and uncompromising, and it was a 1v1 duel worth watching, even if the match itself was not.

U17 Ohio Elite 4, Arsenal FC 0

Ohio Elite was keenly aware that it needed a lopsided win to squeak into the ECNL Nationals. The team accomplished just that by shutting out Arsenal.

Erin Yenney sent a great lead pass to Katie Landgrebe for a goal, and Ellyn Gruber followed up an Arin Gilliland attempt for a score during a stretch that propelled the Ohio squad to their ultimate goal.

They finished second overall in the Challenge A behind PDA.

U15 Virginia FCV Herndon 2, Irvine Strikers 0

Virginia ended their showcase with a dominating performance. Aubrey Fletcher, a small but athletic player, made a pretty header on a cross from Brittany Basinger to give the team the early edge.

Virginia dictated the play with their superior 1v1 players including Sarah Hardison and Megan Benitez, who hit the post on a shot from 30 yards out.

Goalkeeper Haley Casanova was strong for Virginia and squelched Irvine’s opportunities to get into the game.

Virginia finished fourth in the competitive Challenge A division for the weekend, a group won by Ohio Premier with runner-up Arsenal FC having qualified for nationals.
