Williams names roster for Japan tournament

CHICAGO (July 8, 2013) – U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Richie Williams named an 18-player roster to travel to Niigata, Japan, for an International Tournament. The U.S. will face the Japan and Croatia U-17 MNTs, as well as a Niigata All-Star team.

The U.S. trained for four days at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center in Carson, Calif., and departs tomorrow, July 9, for Japan. The U.S. will face Japan on Saturday, July 13, at 4 p.m. local time, followed by Croatia on Sunday, July 14, at 2 p.m. local time. The team will round out the tournament against the Niigata All-Stars on Monday, July 15, at 2 p.m. local time before returning to the U.S.

Twelve of the 18 players traveling to Japan were part of the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Residency Program this past semester, including Corey Baird, Jefferson Caldwell, Conor Donovan, Justen Glad, Christopher Lema, Shaq Moore, Erik Palmer-Brown, Tommy Redding, John Requejo Jr., Rubio Rubin, Ahinga Selemani and Tyler Turner. Fifteen players on the roster have ties to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

It will be the last tournament for the current cycle of players before switching over to the team that will prepare for the 2015 CONCACAF Championship. Seven of the players on the roster were born in 1997, while 10 were born in 1996 and one, Christian Pulisic, was born in 1998.
