MOUNT PLEASANT – The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team, ranked 10th by College Soccer News and 13th by the NSCAA, rolled to a 3-0 win at College of Charleston on a cool and blustery night as Ricky Garbanzo scored a pair of goals and Sergio Camargo added another.

Coastal, winners of seven straight, wasted little time to break into the scoring column as Sergio Camargo netted the game’s first goal in the ninth minute. Camargo finished his opportunity with an acrobatic right-footed shot to the far post. Jakub Stourac and Pedro Ribeiro were credited with assists for their work to spring Camargo in the center of the six-yard box.

Less than two minutes later Ricky Garbanzo made it 2-0 in Coastal’s favor as he found his third goal of the season with an assist from Camargo. Garbanzo easily beat the Cougars’ goalkeeper with his shot from eight-yards out after receiving Camargo’s through ball from near the top of the 18-yard box.

The Chants continued to control possession through the remainder of the half in search of a third counter. However, College of Charleston’s defenders found a way to cut out Coastal’s final pass attempts and regain possession with an eye toward a counter attack.

Coastal backline limited the Cougars to six shots, most of which came from long range, in the first half. CCU’s Devin Cook easily made the save on College of Charleston’s lone shot on frame off the foot of Ike Crook.

At the 50:19 mark of play Cook, who improved his season record to 7-2-0 with the win, was called into service again. And the Simi Valley, Calif., responded with a spectacular diving save to his left on a header by CofC’s Crook that was destined for the far side netting. Twenty minutes later Cook was up to his second true challenge of the evening as a failed clearance in the box was shot back on frame and off Cook’s chest. Cook was able to fight through a pair of Cougars and corral the loose ball for a goal kick.  

Portillo had a great look at a goal with just less than six minutes to play. Portillo received a pass from Justin White, dribble to the top of the D and ripped a blast toward the far post. However, the Cougars’ Alex Young came up with an outstretched save.

Garbanzo notched Coastal’s final and third goal of the game with 4:01 remaining in regulation. The junior received a ball headed into the ‘18 by Portillo. Garbanzo took the ball in stride, took a single touch and buried his shot in the left upper 90 for his second goal of the evening. The multi-goal game is Garbanzo’s first of the season and first since netting a hat trick at South Carolina last season.

The win moves Coastal Carolina to 8-2-0 (3-0-0 Big South) on the season, while College of Charleston drops to 2-8-0 (0-2-0 Colonial Athletic Association). The shutout is Coastal’s fifth on the year and the fourth in the past five games.

Coastal closed the match with 6-2 lead in corner kicks and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. However, the Cougars led in the shots column by a 13-9 margin.

Coastal returns to the friendly confines of the CCU Soccer Field on Friday, Oct. 11 hosting Big South foe VMI. The Chanticleers have never fallen to the Keydets in the team’s 15 previous meeting, going 15-0-0 during the stretch. Coastal won last season’s meeting by an 8-nil score as six different Chants found the back of the net.
