Aggies, Gaels battle to a 2-2 draw

September 25, 2016

MORAGA, Calif. - Freshmen Roisin Allaeddini and Hinsseenee Regassa recorded their first collegiate goals during Saturday’s non-conference match in Moraga, and UC Aggie goalkeeper Alexis Smith collected four saves as UC Davis and Saint Mary’s ended their final non-conference matches of the season with a 2-2, double-overtime draw.

UC Davis will enter Friday evening’s Big West Conference opener at CSUN with a 4-5-2 overall record; Saint Mary’s will enter its West Coast Conference opener sporting a 2-7-2 mark.

Allaeddini scored the Aggies’ first goal 14:30 into the first half on her team’s first corner kick of the afternoon. After kicking the ball into play to Nicole Bouvia, Allaeddini rushed into the box to join the play in progress. Bouvia found Crystal Crump, who decided to play the ball back to Allaeddini, instead of taking a shot on goal. That decision paid immediate dividends because the Aggie newcomer beat SMC goalkeeper Julia McDonald to the upper left-hand side of the goal to give her team an early lead.

That advantage held until the opening minutes of the second half when the Gaels drew even by converting on a penalty kick.

Saint Mary’s took a 2-1 lead 20 minutes later, but that slim cushion quickly disappeared when Regassa tied the score with six minutes remaining in regulation.

It was Mandy McKeegan who set up the game-tying goal when she found her teammate at the top of the box. Once Regassa received the ball, she chipped the ball over McDonald, who had no chance to redirecting the ball to safety. On her beautiful touch chip, Regassa thwarted the Gaels’ chance of sweeping its weekend matches — SMC defeated Sacramento State, 2-1, in comeback fashion — and forced the Aggies to compete in its third overtime contest of the year.

After a first overtime period that saw each team record one shot, neither team was able to break through in double OT, and recorded their final respective shot of the afternoon throughout the final 10 minutes of action.

Allaeddini, Damian and Celina Minissian, who faced her former team for the final time in her career on Saturday, each ended their day with two shots; besides UC Davis’ goal scorers, Crump recorded a shot on goal.

Women’s soccer will now have six days to prepare for its next match, the Aggies’ Big West opener at CSUN. Friday’s contest will start at 7 p.m. and end UC Davis’ current three-match road swing.
