Akron men beat Michigan 7-1
October 20, 2010
AKRON, Ohio – Hermann Trophy candidate Kofi Sarkodie recorded Akron's second hat trick in as many games to lead The No. 1 University of Akron men's soccer team to a 7-1 victory over Michigan Tuesday night in front of 3,018 fans at Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field.
Just three days after freshman Darren Mattocks scored three goals in a 4-0 win against Buffalo, Sarkodie matched the effort with two goals in the first half and another in the second against the Wolverines (8-4-3). It was the first career hat trick for the defender Sarkodie, who also scored a pair of goals against Florida Atlantic earlier this year.
The game was broadcast live regionally on SportsTime Ohio. A re-broadcast of the game will air Wednesday at Noon on STO.
With the win, the Zips (12-0-1) extended their home unbeaten streak to 32 games (31-0-1) dating back to the 2008 season. It is the fourth-longest run in NCAA history.
In a game that featured the top two scoring freshmen in the nation, both Akron's Darren Mattocks and Michigan's Soony Saad each found the net for their respective teams. Saad, who has scored 12 goals in 14 games, netted U-M's lone score in the first half while Mattocks, who has scored 11 goals in 13 games, added UA's first goal of the second half in the 55th minute.
