Akron women defeat Buffalo
October 24, 2009
BUFFALO, N.Y.- The University of Akron's soccer team topped Buffalo 2-0 on Friday in Mid-American Conference play at UB Stadium extending its win streak to four matches and recording its third-consecutive shutout. With the win, Akron (7-6-2, 5-3-1 MAC) has clinched its first-ever berth in the league tournament, which gets underway on Nov. 1 at campus sites.
Both UA goals came in the second half, with freshman Katie Wise scoring what would prove to be the eventual gamewinner at 48:01. Wise's second score of the season came as she put in a ball that had rebounded off of Buffalo (3-13-1, 2-6-1 MAC) goalkeeper Amy Coron. UA senior Britni Back added an insurance goal at 66:36, controlling a loose ball in the box and sending it into an open net. It was the senior's third goal of the season and came off of one of her game-high three shots on goal.
The Zips outshot the Bulls 11-7 for the game and owned an 8-2 edge in the second period. UA also held an 8-1 margin in shots on goal.
The UA defense held strong, limiting UB to just one shot on goal. Zips' sophomore goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert picked up her sixth win of the season and notched her fourth shutout of the year and seventh of her collegiate career.
Akron, who has won five of its last six contests, defeated Buffalo for the third-straight season and won at UB for the second-consecutive year. The Zips have outscored their opposition 9-2 over the last six games. Additionally, UA's five conference wins tied the program record set in 2003, when that team went 5-7-0 against league competition.
UA travels to neighborhood rival Kent State on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, and then closes its regular season at home on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. versus Ohio. The MAC Tournament begins on Nov. 1 at campus sites. Only the top-eight teams in the standings qualify for the event, with the top-four hosting first round matches.
