Burgos Scores GWG As UMBC Blanks Drexel, 1-0

BALTIMORE – UMBC junior midfielder Michael Burgos (Huntingtown, Md.) notched an early second half goal as the Retrievers blanked visiting Drexel, 1-0, in chilly conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.

 

The Retrievers snapped a four-game winless streak and improved to 8-5-3 on the season. UMBC completed its non-conference slate with seven wins, three losses and one draw. Drexel dropped its eighth consecutive game and slid to 2-14-1.

 

The Retrievers have a pair of league games remaining - at U Mass Lowell on Oct.  31 and at home versus Stony Brook on Nov. 4.

 

The two sides combined for 14 first half shots (UMBC, 9-5), but could neither club created dangerous chances. The Retrievers came out with renewed energy in the second half and capitalized in the 52nd minute off a corner kick. Senior Malcolm Harris (Damascus, Md./McDonogh) served the corner from the right side and sophomore midfielder Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) headed the ball from the center of the box towards the left post. Burgos, left unguarded five yards from the net, wheeled and volleyed the ball inside the left post to give the Retrievers their first lead in five games.

 

Burgos netted his second goal of the season, while Hauck picked up his third assist and Harris posted his second.

 

Despite leading, UMBC kept the pressure on Drexel for most of the half and outshot the Dragons, 7-1, in the stanza and attempted seven of the nine corners.

 

UMBC junior netminder Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa.) did not have to make a save to record his fifth shutout of the season. Dragon keeper Jacob Jordan was credited with four of the team’s five saves as UMBC outshot DU, 16-6 over 90 minutes.

 

UMBC is 31-4-6 in its last 41 contests at Retriever Soccer Park.
