Collins Lifts Terps Past La Salle, 1-0

August 30, 2015

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Shannon Collins’ saw her first half corner kick sneak in the near post for the lone tally of the match as the Maryland’s women’s soccer team took out La Salle, 1-0, at Ludwig Field Sunday night.

The Terrapins (3-1-0) peppered the Explorer penalty area with chances in the first half before gutting out the second stanza. Maryland finishes its opening home stand with three wins, just two off its total from last season.

“I’m proud of our kids effort. We gutted it out,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “Our mantra is “GRIT” and this was a gritty performance. We found a way to get a win today.”

Maryland held the ball in its attacking third for the majority of the first half and created a number of dangerous chances. Sophomore Alex Anthony’s five yard attempt was blocked in the third minute before junior Gabby Galanti saw her shot blocked by a La Salle defender in the sixth minute.

Collins’ goal came in the seventh minute. The senior struck a low hard drive to the near post that bended in after a mistake from La Salle keeper Katie Getzinger. The goal was the second of Collins’ career and her first since October 1 2012 against Boston College.

The Terps continued to wreak havoc in the final third, but were unable to find a second tally. In the 13th minute, Senior Riley Barger had a blast that was blocked while senior Sarah Molina’s header in the 26th minutes found the hand of Getzinger.

Sophomore Kate Waters got into the act in the 38th minute with an effort the found the back of an Explorer defender. That shot deflected to Barger, who saw her goal bound shot cleared off the line. In total, the Terps notched 12 shots in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands was troubled just once as she tipped a Kari Las Nickels effort away that was headed for the upper corner.

La Salle found more footing in the second half, but the Terps continued to create the better chances. Anthony’s shot from 25 yards near the beginning of the half whizzed past Getzinger’s left post. Senior Sarah Fichtner, who filled in for Amanda Gerlitz at right back, missed the best chance of the half, slashing a close range shot wide off a Barger free kick.

For the game, Maryland outshot the Explorers 18-to-9 and notched eight corner kicks to La Salle’s two. The Terps have notched 16 or more shots in three of four games this season.

The Terrapins return to action for a two-game road trip in Texas. Maryland faces TCU Friday with kickoff from Fort Worth scheduled for 8 p.m.
