Ducks Falter Against #20 Illinois, 5-0

September 19, 2011

BATON ROUGE, La.- The University of Oregon soccer team (4-2-1) suffered a 5-0 setback to #20 Illinois (6-2) on the final day of the LSU Tournament on Sunday at the LSU Soccer Stadium.

The Illini are the second ranked opponent that the Ducks have encountered on the season thus far, moving their record to 0-1-1 against those squads. Oregon previously went into a scoreless draw with #16 Santa Clara.

Illinois tallied their first goal of the match off a loose ball that Jackie Guerra put through the net at the 16:53 mark and the Illini rattled off four more goals after that to keep the Ducks off balanced.

Junior Kelsey Hones took UO's first shot of the match at 11:17 and had it blocked by the Illini defense. The Ducks were granted a corner kick on their next possession, but junior Scout Libke's corner did not draw any results.

Junior Julie Armstrong, who had Oregon's only two shots on goal, had a solid look at 23:14, but it was saved by UI goalkeeper Steph Panozza.

Junior Mo Fitzgerald got another look at 31:33, but her shot went wide.

The Illini added their second goal of the match with less than five minutes left in the first half to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room.

Illinois added another goal at the 55:09 mark to go ahead 3-0 after Megan Pawloski got a pass from Niki Read from inside the six-yard box.

Freshman Kelsey Foo looked to put one on the board for the Ducks off a corner kick at 58:10, but her shot went over the goal.

Illini tacked on their fourth goal of the match shortly after the third, but Foo took another shot at 71:28 and her shot once again sailed high over the net.

After receiving another corner at 75:16, freshman Riley Smith was able to get a shot off the play, but the result was wide.

The Illini ended the match outshooting the Ducks, 15-7 and also won the battle of the corners, 8-4.

Freshman Abby Steele (0-2-1) recorded the loss and Panozza picked up the win.

Oregon returns to action on Sept. 16 against UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Oregon State Tournament.
