BOISE, Idaho -- Junior midfielder Julie Armstrong and freshman forward Shanelle Simien scored goals in leading the University of Oregon soccer team to a 2-0 road win over Boise State on Sunday.

The Ducks won both of their matches at the season-opening Boise State tournament and are off to their best start since the 2007 season when they jumped out to a 3-0 record.

“I thought we played better today, with a lot more possession soccer,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “We definitely moved the ball around and I felt we wore them down a little bit on what was a really hot day.

“We got rolling in the second half, sticking with the game plan, attacked well, and came away with the result,” Erickson said.

The Ducks had the advantage in shots (11-6), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (5-3). Armstrong had a team-high four shots, two of which were on target.

The matches’ first goal came in the 65th minute, when Armstrong was on the receiving end of an assist from sophomore Achijah Berry. The second-year defender from Seattle, Wash., made an over-lapping run, played the ball back into Armstrong who finished it to the near post.

Armstrong, from Delta, B.C., played a role in the second goal which came in the 89th minute. After getting in behind the defense, she drove a shot at BSU goalkeeper Liz Ruiz, who deflected it out to the top of the 18-yard box. Freshman forward Shanelle Simien rebounded the save and fired a shot past the keeper to the far post.

It was the second consecutive game the Ducks had a freshman forward score a goal. Armstrong finished the two-game tourney with a goal, while assisting on two others.

UO goalkeepers Lindsay Parlee and Abby Steele once again split time. The senior received the start while the freshman came in for the second half. Steele recorded UO’s only save in the match.

Juniors Scout Libke and Lauren Thompson were joined by freshman Kelsey Foo as those who played the full 90 minutes on Sunday.

“A lot of players contributed in the match, 19 players stepped in there and played well,” Erickson added. “It was nice to see other players stepping up and sharing the load with consistent players like Scout and LT.”

Oregon (2-0) is off to its best start since the 2007 season when it jumped out to a 3-0 record.

The Ducks return to action next week with one match, a home contest against UNLV on Sunday, Aug. 28. Match-time for the Ducks-Rebels contest is set for 1 p.m. (PT) at Pape’ Field.
