NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Sophomore Melissa Frederick scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway in the 108th minute to give the Iona College women’s soccer team its first victory of the season over the University of Rhode Island, 2-1 (2OT), at Mazzella Field on Friday afternoon.

Senior Laura Jackson and junior Sofia Sanchez set up the rally allowing Frederick’s chip shot to beat Rhode Island (3-1) netminder Reilly Lindsey. Jackson’s stretch pass got through the defence in route to Frederick heading towards goal.

Iona (1-2-1) junior netminder Trista Rivera was a major piece to the victory making five saves, two of which came in the first overtime off a diving save on a shot by Ashley Evangelista and then a kick save moments later.

Iona trailed the contest after a seventh minute goal by Ellie Bailes off a cross from Evangelista beat Rivera on the short side. The Gaels tied up the contest in the 16th minute on a free kick by senior Leah Taylor after the ball bounced around the box to beat Lindsey.

Both sides finished with 12 shots and three corner kicks each, but the lone Iona shot in the extra frames was the most important.

The Gaels will have the week off before heading down to Philadelphia for a pair of non-conference games against Temple on Friday and Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.
