Huskers Explode for Six Goals in Win over Arkansas

September 12, 2011

After scoring four goals through the first three games of the 2011 season, the Nebraska soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0-0) more than doubled its goal total on Friday night in a 6-0 shutout of Arkansas at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Huskers were led by juniors Morgan Marlborough and Jordan Jackson, who each scored two goals, while sophomore Stacy Bartels scored her second goal of the season and sophomore Ari Romero chipped in her first goal of 2011.

The Husker defense gave solid support to sophomore goalkeeper Emma Stevens and only allowed four shots on goal to help Stevens produce the first shutout of her young career at Nebraska.

Unlike the first three games of the year where the Huskers allowed the opposition to get on the board first, Nebraska struck early and often with a pair of goals from Marlborough and Jackson in the first five minutes of the game. Marlborough put her first goal in from 15 yards out following a perfect cross from Jackson at 3:59. Less than 30 seconds later, Jackson stole a kick from Arkansas goalie Emily Lillard and easily put the ball in the back of the net to put NU up 2-0.

Even with the 2-0 cushion, the Huskers continued to attack and at 17:12 Marlborough sent a cross that was missed by Jackson, but Romero was not far behind and blasted in her second career goal from more than 30 yards away to give NU a 3-0 first-half lead. The Huskers made their shots count as six of their seven first-half attempts were on goal.

The duo of Jackson and Marlborough again struck quickly in the second half, this time with Jackson scoring first at 51:11. The Overland Park, Kan., native got the ball in the box and lofted a perfect chip shot over goalie Kelly Roliard to notch the fourth multi-goal game of her career. Marlborough followed with her second goal of the game less than a minute later to put the Huskers up 5-0, while also producing her second straight multi-goal game, after scoring both of Nebraska's goals against Denver last Thursday.

Bartels finished off the scoring for the Huskers at 61:54 when Romero setup Bartels right in front of the net for an easy goal. Eight Huskers on the night produced at least one shot attempt, including three each from Jackson, Marlborough and Maddie Hanssler.
