Idaho Falls in Overtime

October 20, 2013

MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho Vandals erased two one-goal deficits against Utah Valley to force overtime at Guy Wicks Field on Sunday. The extra period did not fall the way of the Vandals as they dropped their third overtime game of the season, 3-2.

“I was pleased at how we battled back both times to get to 2-2,” head coach Pete Showler said. “It is almost like we feel the work is done and we ease off and they bang go down and the other end and score.”

Tied at two at the end of regulation both teams prepared for the first extra period of play. The Wolverines came out in overtime and took the momentum away from the Vandals. In the 95th minute UVU’s Kali Stubbs had a shot blocked and Idaho momentarily cleared the ball out of the zone. Taylor Kirk who found a streaking Haley Curtis played the ball back into the Idaho defensive zone. Curtis made a run to 10 yards out and launched a shot that Idaho keeper Torell Stewart could not completely redirect as the ball found the back of the net at the 94:29 mark.

Utah Valley (7-8-1, 5-3-1 WAC) got on the board first with a goal three minutes into the contest. Melanie Ostler netted her first goal of the season on a shot that grazed the fingertips of a leaping Marina Siegl as she was unable to corral the ball in the air.

Unable to find the back of the net the past three games the Vandal offense pushed one across in the 15th minute. Gabby Leong recorded her first collegiate goal, slipping one past UVU keeper Lauren Sack. Leong fielded the ball from juniorKatie Baran and fired it from eight yards out.

“We showed so many good aspects and did so many good things today,” Showler stated. “Not to take anything away from Utah Valley’s victory, but I was also pleased at how well we came back from a goal down each time. We have to build on that.”

Idaho (3-12-0, 3-5-0 WAC) got a goal from freshman Kavita Battan to tie the game at two in the 66th minute. Cutting towards the middle of the field Battan shot the ball from 15 yards out. Sack stretched out for the ball heading to her left but was unable to contain the shot as it slipped out of her reach and dribbled across the goal line.

The Vandals partnered with the Light A Candle foundation to help raise money to better the lives of those affected by cancer in Lattah County. At the end of the day $1,287 was raised through concession sales and a silent auction.

The will next be in action on Oct. 25 as they head west to Kansas City to take on the 'Roos. Idaho will finish its final road trip of the season with games against New Mexico State (Oct. 27) and Seattle U (Oct. 31).

Notes: Junior transfer Taryn Phillips saw her first action of 2013…Baran’s assist now puts her at 13 for her career and tied for fourth all-time with current graduate assistant Chelsea Small (’13)…senior Chelsie Breen has now started 75 games as a Vandal, tying her for the fourth most in school history….Idaho is now 9-17-24 all time in overtime.
