Late Seattle Goal Sends Cal Poly to 2-1 Defeat

September 4, 2011

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Seattle freshman forward Travis Heim scored seven seconds from full time on Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program, contesting its second double-overtime match during a three-day span, suffered a 2-1 defeat at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 into the 86th minute, Cal Poly sent the match into extra time after senior left back Wes Feighner found junior forward Dakota Collins inside the Seattle penalty area with a throw-in from the left touch line. Collins, an offseason transfer from UCLA, poked his first collegiate goal past Seattle sophomore goalkeeper Jake Feener and into the left corner of the net.

Cal Poly, however, saw an eight-match unbeaten run at Spanos Stadium snapped in the 110th minute as Heim took a feed in front of goal from junior forward Mikey Ramos, spun and deposited the game-winning shot past Mustang senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain.

The Mustangs, who outshot Seattle (1-1-1), 14-11, were held without an attempt until Feighner fired wide during the 10th minute. Mustang junior forward Benny Estes was stopped just a minute later by Feener before senior midfielder Ryan Anderson had his attempt turned away during the 12th minute. Cal Poly, however, was held to just a single shot attempt the remainder of the half.

Cal Poly opened the second half with freshman midfielder Keegan Smith and Collins both testing Feener twice inside the opening 15 minutes.

However, Cal Poly’s failure to finish kept the door open for Seattle, which placed just two shots on target during the second half. The Mustang back line, which hadn’t allowed a goal for the initial 252 minutes of the 2011 campaign, saw senior defender Brandon Hamer notch the game’s opening strike in the 73rd minute.

McLain finished with three saves for Cal Poly, which continues its five-match home stand versus Villanova on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
