Late UC Davis Goal Sends Cal Poly to 1-0 Defeat

October 5, 2011

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman forward Matt Wiesenfarth’s team-leading third goal six minutes from time provided UC Davis a 1-0 victory against the Cal Poly men’s soccer team on Wednesday evening at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Mustang senior left back Wes Feighner headed two UC Davis attempts off the goal line midway through the second half and Wiesenfarth slammed an open-net attempt off the crossbar 30 seconds before scoring the match-winning goal for the Aggies (4-5-2, 2-1-0), who defeated Cal Poly on the road for the first time in five years.

“It was a Big West Conference battle tonight, sort of like a street fight, and UC Davis won the street fight,” sixth-year Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. “UC Davis battled and found a way to win.”

Cal Poly (4-4-2, 1-1-0), which held UC Davis without a shot attempt for the opening 44 minutes, enjoyed the run of play in the first half. Senior center back Patrick Sigler, who finished with a team-leading three shot attempts, saw a fifth-minute header corralled by UC Davis sophomore goalkeeper Omar Zeeni. Sigler also fired wide during the 28th before junior forward Chris Gaschen ripped a shot that was cleared by Zeeni six minutes before the break.

The Aggies nearly broke the scoreless deadlock on the hour mark, but a looping attempt by sophomore forward Kevin Schulte was headed off the goal line by Feighner, who also cleared sophomore forward Alex Henry’s try just seconds later.

Wiesenfarth, who notched a match-high four shots, then found a way around the Mustang back line during the 84th minute. With Cal Poly senior goalkeeper Patrick McLain behind the play, however, Wiesenfarth whacked his attempt off the cross bar.

Cal Poly enjoyed one final chance to knot the scoreline during the dying seconds, but Sigler headed left of goal just before the final whistle.

Cal Poly continues its four-match home stand on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. versus UC Riverside.
