Lehigh hosts Lafayette in PLT Tuesday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding three straight wins to close out the regular season, the Lehigh women's soccer team begins the Patriot League Tournament on Tuesday when it hosts Lafayette in the quarterfinal round. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The third-seeded Mountain Hawks and sixth-seeded Leopards played a competitive game in the regular season with Lehigh coming out on top, 1-0 in Easton.

Tuesday will mark Lehigh's first home game in the Patriot League Tournament since finishing as the No. 1 seed in 2005. The Mountain Hawks were last in the league tournament in 2012 when they were the fourth seed. The last time Lehigh entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed, it won the Patriot League in 2010.
 
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-0 win over American on Friday evening as a second-half goal from sophomore Sabrina Mertz was all the scoring Lehigh would need. The defense pitched its 12th shutout of the season and now stands fourth nationally in shutout percentage (12 shutouts in 17 games). A member of the back line, freshman Annika Jansa, was recognized on Monday with Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, Lehigh's 13th weekly award overall as Jansa because the third different Rookie of the Week winner, along with Sam Miller and Sidonie Warnecker.
 
Four other Mountain Hawks were also recognized on Monday with All-Patriot League recognition as juniors Alyssa Riporti and Adrian Vitello were named to the first team, while Miller and senior Tori Pantaleo garnered second team laurels. Pantaleo scored the game's only goal in the regular season meeting against Lafayette.
 
Following Lehigh's win over Lafayette, the Leopards earned a big 1-0 overtime victory at Navy before dropping a 2-1 final to Colgate on Saturday evening. Lafayette enters the postseason with a 6-7-4 overall record and 3-5-1 mark in the Patriot League. Along with Navy, the Leopards have beaten Holy Cross and American while tying Loyola. Melissa Lynskey leads the team in goals (9) and points (19) while Kaelin King also has 10 points behind two goals and a team-leading six assists. A pair of goalkeepers have split time as Kelly O'Brien has tallied a 0.92 goals against average and .816 save percentage in 684:45 while Danielle Sedillo owns a 1.15 GAA and .803 save percentage in 935:48.
 
The Mountain Hawks have won three straight meetings with Lafayette to take a 17-7-2 edge in the all-time series. Prior to 2014, the Leopards had won four straight, coming right after Lehigh had won nine in a row. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the rivals, 2-1 on Oct. 19, 1991.
 
If Lehigh wins on Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks would face second-seeded Boston University on Friday at top seed Bucknell.
