LIU men fall to St. Francis (NY)

Brooklyn, N.Y. -The Long Island University(m) men' soccer team lost its season finale to St. Francis (N.Y.), 4-1, on Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y. Freshman forward Jakeem Johnson (Upper Montclair, N.J.) continued his high-scoring campaign by adding his 10th goal on the year. The Blackbirds finished the 2009 season with a record of 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the Northeast Conference.
The Terriers quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. SFNY's Jeverton DeLorenzi scored from 10 yards out to put St. Francis ahead early. Long Island' Craig Stant (Elston, England) blasted a shot on net in the 38th minute but was denied by Terrier goalkeeper Chris Antonino.
Johnson netted his conference leading 10th tally in the 67th minute. The Upper Montclair, N.J., native sent a strike from 20 yards out past Antonino to knot the contest at 1-1. The 10 goals is the most in a single season for Long Island since Oskar Tilly scored 12 for the Blackbirds in 2002.
Once LIU tied the contest, the Terriers came out firing with their first goal coming in the 73rd minute. Javier Gonzalez took a throw in from Tevin Jackson and headed the ball into the netting to take a 2-1 advantage. Under two minutes later, John Sallhag took a pass from Edson DaSilva and scored from nine yards out to extend the lead.
The Terriers finished off their scoring in the 81st minute when Greg Baum headed in a shot off a rebound. Long Island goalkeeper Adam Janssen (Toronto, Ontario) made three saves in the effort.
Freshman forward Roston Moore (Highland, Md.) represented the Blackbirds? best chance to score in the second frame when he fired a shot in the 63rd minute but he couldn?t find the goal as Antonino snuffed out the attempt. Long Island was outshot in the contest 13-5 and the Terriers held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. St. Francis held an 8-7 edge in fouls committed while the Blackbirds took two corners to the Terriers' one.
