Massachusetts men draw with Dartmouth
September 30, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Tyler Cleverdon scored in the 27th minute of play and senior keeper Chris Piekos made a career-high 12 saves as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team forced Dartmouth into a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Big Green answered UMass' early goal with an equalizer nearly two minutes later thanks to Andrew Olsen. Dartmouth's 22 shots were just one shy of a season-high for a UMass opponent this year.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday as they host Siena (1 PM) at Rudd Field.
For UMass, this was the fifth double overtime match of the season totaling 99 minutes, 35 seconds of extra time. The Minutemen move to 1-3-4 overall, while Dartmouth is now 4-2-1 on the season. Saturday's match against Siena will be the final non-conference game for UMass.
Cleverdon's goal came at the 26 minute, 31 second mark of the match as he ripped a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. He was assisted by Chris Roswess and David Key.
Olsen answered at the 28 minute, 20 second mark placing a shot into the lower right corner after a pass from Lucky Mkosana.
In the 52nd minute, a UMass foul in the 18-yard box game the Big Green a penalty kick, but Piekos read the shot making a diving save to his right to keep the game even.
After just three shots for Dartmouth and two for UMass in the first half, the second half opened up quite a bit. The Big Green posted 14 shots in the half, while UMass fired 10.
In the first overtime, the Minutemen survived four nearly consecutive corner kicks for Dartmouth and were outshot 4-to-0. Piekos made two saves in the 10-minute period to again force another overtime.
The second overtime saw both teams play more compact defensively as each side had just one shot. UMass earned two corners, but could not convert.
