Moore Scores 1st Careerr Goal in Draw

September 20, 2013

EUGENE, Ore. -- Redshirt-sophomore defender Reilley Moore scored her first career goal, leading the University of Oregon to a comeback 1-1 double overtime draw against San Francisco on Friday night at Papé Field. Moore scored an equalizing goal in the 78th minute as Oregon fought to a second consecutive draw through regulation and two overtime periods.

The Dons (5-2-1) opened the scoring with a 50th minute goal from Lexie Krueger; her third goal of the season. Oregon (2-4-2) responded well and found a 78th minute equalizing goal, and improved as the game went on. The match marked Oregon’s third overtime contest of the season.

“There are two positives I take away from this game; scoring off a set piece and getting corner kicks, and coming back from being down a goal to tie the game,” said head coach Kat Mertz. “I thought we did enough in the second half to win, and in that sense, it’s a little disappointing to come away with a tie. We’re learning as a team, and we’ll come out ready for Washington State on Thursday.”

The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate as both defenses had the upper-hand. San Francisco out-shot the Ducks 4-3 in the first half.

The second half started with a much different style, as both teams looked to break the tie. It was the Dons who would do so first, as an Oregon turnover in San Francisco’s attacking third left Krueger with the ball inside the box. She slotted her shot home to give the Dons the 1-0 lead.

Oregon came out hungry after allowing the goal and forced San Francisco to play defense. The Ducks responded with a goal of their own in the 78th minute after creating a chance off a corner kick. Lilly Archer whipped the ball into the box, and the ball took a few deflections before falling to Moore. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native struck the ball past San Francisco goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel to level the game at 1-1.

Sophomore Maryn Beutler’s shot with two seconds remaining was blocked, and the game went to overtime. Junior Bri Pugh took Oregon’s only two shots in the first overtime period, but both sailed wide. The second overtime period saw just one shot as both defenses held on to the draw.

“It wasn’t our best game, but we came back from a goal down and we kept fighting,” said Moore, who is the only field player on the team to play every minute of the season. “The positive we got from this game is that we didn’t give up on ourselves and we believed in each other. It would have been nice to put another one away, but we’ll take this result and look to improve on it.”

The Ducks and Dons were even in shots (10), shots on goal (5) and fouls (15), while the Ducks held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Abby Steele made four saves, while Pugh led the offensive efforts with four shots and two shots on target. Pugh has led the team in shots in each of the past five games.

Steele, Pugh, Moore, Achijah Berry, Riley Smith and Gabbie Lindeman played all 110 minutes for the Ducks in the draw.

Oregon opens Pac-12 play on Thursday, hosting Washington State in the final match of Oregon’s nine-game home stand. The contest will get underway at 7 p.m. (PT) from Papé Field, and will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks.
