No. 10 Women's Soccer, Providence Play to 1-

August 22, 2016

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 10 Rutgers women's soccer and Providence played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights were sparked in the 34th minute on the first goal of Brittany LaPlant's career, but allowed a penalty shot goal to Providence in the 82nd minute to tie the match. Overall, RU outshot the Friars, 24-4, and posted a 9-0 corner kick advantage.

"I don't think we came to play today, plain and simple" said head coach Mike O'Neill. "Our habits were not good. Our awareness of space and how to play with each other wasn't good. There was a lot of frustration on the field. Credit to Providence, they really worked out there today."

The Scarlet Knights (1-0-1) set up for a corner kick late in the first half, with senior Jennifer Andresen sending the ball into the goal area. After rattling around for a few moments, LaPlant found the rebound and connected with a left-footed finish into the back of the net.

Despite numerous opportunities in both halves and four shots during extra time, RU could not find another goal to capture the win. Senior Madison Tiernan and junior Colby Ciarroccapaced the squad in shots with seven and six, respectively.

Working into the box with less than 10 minutes on the clock, the Scarlet Knights clipped an advancing Providence player to the left side of the frame. That foul led to a penalty attempt for Katie Day, who went left for the goal. Senior goalkeeper Alana Jimenez made one save in the draw.

The Scarlet Knights play next on Friday, Aug. 26 at Yurcak Field against Saint Joseph's at 5:30 p.m. The match is part of a Rutgers soccer doubleheader with the men's team, which plays at 8 p.m. in its season opener against Creighton. Both matches will be streamed online on BTN Plus.
