College Park, Md. – UMBC freshman red-shirt goalkeeper Phil Breno (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made six saves as 11th-ranked UMBC (2-0-1) played No. 7 Maryland (1-1-1) to a 0-0 double overtime draw before a huge crowd at Ludwig Field. The game was part of the Hampton Inn BWI Classic.

UMBC extended its unbeaten streak to 13 straight (9-0-4), dating back to last season. Moreover, the Retrievers are unbeaten in their last 11 road contests, winning seven and drawing four times.

The gathering of 7,284 was the fifth-most in the history of the facility, but the partisan Maryland crowd did not throw off the defensive efforts of the Retrievers.

“I thought Breno played exceptionally well, considering the crowd, the national tv audience and the magnitude of the game,” said UMBC head coach Pete Caringi. “Our defense played as good as it can this early in the season. Our experience showed in key moments in the game.”

Breno posted his second shutout of the season, as he faced 13 Terrapin shots.  UMBC countered with six attempts and played the Terrapins evenly in the final 65 minutes.  

Maryland outshot UMBC, 5-3, in the opening half and Breno came up with three saves for the Retrievers.

UMBC pressured the host Terps in the middle part of second half, keeping the ball in the Maryland end of the field for long stretches, but could not come up with high quality scoring efforts against UM netminder Zak Steffan. Their best chance occurred when junior forward Michael Scott slipped a ball through Steffan on a run straight across the three-yard line, but no Retriever could get on the end of the loose ball.

Maryland countered down the stretch and Breno came up with two high-quality denials in the final 11 minutes. He made a great knock-away of a cross in the 79’ and came up with a diving save in the 84’ to preserve the shutout.  

UMBC had the best chance late in regulation, which included a corner kick by senior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) in final minute, but the Retrievers could not get anything on goal.

There was only one shot in the twenty minutes of overtime and it was recorded by UMBC left back Jordan Becker (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke). Becker and senior forward Kay Banjo (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo/Towson U.) led the Retrievers with two shots apiece.

“I have never been more proud of our fans, students, alumni and Lot 17 for their support,” said Caringi. “Maryland is the benchmark for fans and we had a great crowd of Retriever nation present.”

The Hampton Inn BWI Classic concludes as UMBC faces Appalachian State on Sunday and Maryland travels to Annapolis to play Navy on Monday. USNA blanked ASU, 5-0, in Annapolis this evening.
