October 27, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. -- For the second consecutive match, the No. 13 Old Dominion men’s soccer team played to a double-overtime draw against a top-20 opponent, as the Monarchs tied No. 11 USF, 1-1, on Tuesday night at Corbett Stadium.

ODU (8-2-3) went ahead in the 29th minute and held the lead for the majority of the match, before conceding the equalizer to USF (10-3-3) in the 82nd minute.

Jesse Miralrio put the Monarchs up midway through the first half. The junior midfielder received a pass from freshman teammate Niko Klosterhalfen and ripped a shot from 25 yards out, which deflected off of a USF defender and skimmed off the post and into the back of the net. The goal was Miralrio’s fourth of the season.

ODU carried the 1-0 lead into half, despite USF holding a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks at the break. Monarch goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen made a key save in the 15th minute, thwarting a USF breakaway opportunity.

In the second half, USF put numbers forward in search of the equalizer. The Monarch defense held strong until the 82nd minute, when Melvin Becket found the back of the net for the Bulls, finishing a cross from Lindo Mfeka.

The match then went to two overtime periods with the scored tied at 1-1, but neither team could find the matchwinner.

Overall, USF outshot ODU, 19-5, and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. However, despite the disparity in shots, the Bulls managed to put just six of their 19 attempts on target.

Tyler Edwards and Miralrio led the Monarchs with two shots apiece, while Tiesenhausen tallied five saves in net.
