September 13, 2015
NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 22 Old Dominion men’s soccer team won the 40th Annual STIHL Classic after defeating Hartford, 3-2, in double overtime on Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. Senior Ivan Militar scored the match winner in the 105th minute off of a free kick from 30 yards out to give the Monarchs the thrilling victory. Hartford (1-2-2) went ahead in the 28th minute on a goal from junior forward Jeff Tryon. A deflection off of a long ball fell to the feet of Tryon inside the six, who then slipped a low shot past ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen. The Hawks carried the 1-0 lead into halftime, despite ODU holding the edge in both shots, 3-2, and corner kicks, 2-0. Old Dominion (4-1-0) answered in the second half scoring a pair of goals less than five minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead early in the half. Ryan Condotta drove home a penalty kick in the 59th minute, before defender and Tournament MVP Michael Nelson headed in the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute off of a Militar corner kick. However, Hartford fought back to tie the game at 2-2, as Javoni Simms found the back of the net in the 66th minute. The scored remained deadlocked through the full 90 minutes and the first 10-minute overtime period. Just over four minutes into the second overtime period, Militar skipped in his long-distance set piece to deliver the Monarchs the Queen’s Cup trophy. Militar whipped in a long, curling ball that bounced through a crowd of players and into the right side of the net. ODU held a commanding advantage in both shots, 18-7, and corner kicks, 10-1. In net, Tiesenhausen tallied two saves to earn his fourth win of the season. In addition to Nelson as Tournament MVP, Condotta, Militar and Jesse Miralrio earned All-Tournament Team honors for ODU.
