Oregon State Drops Heartbreaker to Nebraska

August 28, 2016

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Nebraska on Sunday in a double-overtime nonleague game at Paul Lorenz Field.

The Cornhuskers (3-1-0) won the first game between the two teams when Brenna Ochoa tucked a 25-yard shot inside the right post just 50 seconds into the second overtime period.

The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Beavers (1-1-1) and left them 0-2-3 in their last five overtime games over the past two seasons. It also gave them a split on the weekend as they edged Stephen F. Austin, 2-1 on Friday night.

"It was a pretty even game, I think both teams had some very good chances and at the end of the day Nebraska finished off one of theirs," said head coach Linus Rhode. "This one hurts. Overtime is always tough, but we keep moving forward."

Nebraska outshot the Beavers 13-11 and had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Nikki FarisEmma Jones and Sabrina Santarossa all had two shots and goalkeeper Bella Geist made five saves.

Jones nearly won it for OSU in the first overtime, but her line-drive shot from 15-feet out was turned away by Nebraska goalie Aubrei Corder with a diving stop.

Nebraska scored the lone goal of the first half at 44:36 when Haley Hanson redirected a corner kick past Geist. OSU drew even at 52:54 on a free kick by Santarossa from just outside the 18-yard box.

Senior midfielder, Santarossa curled a left-footed shot over the wall to beat Corder just inside the right post for her second goal of her career. Her previous score was against St. Mary's on Aug. 31, 2014, also at Paul Lorenz Field.

It was the first game between the programs, and OSU's first against a Big Ten Conference opponent since a 1-1 home draw with Wisconsin on Sept. 1, 2013.

The Beavers return to the pitch on Friday with a 5 p.m., game against North Texas at Paul Lorenz Field. They are 0-1 lifetime against UNT, which prevailed 1-0 in Denton in 2014 in the series opener.

OSU concludes its season-opening, five-game homestand at 1 p.m., Sept. 4 against Boise State at Lorenz Field. The Beavers are 1-0-1 all-time against the Broncos, who last played in 2007.
