Oregon State Hands Men’s Soccer First Loss

September 12, 2014

Devonte Small’s goal less than two minutes into the match proved to be the difference as Oregon State handed Siena Soccer a 1-0 loss on the opening day of the Henson/Zaher Nike Classic in Corvallis, Ore. The defeat was the first of the season for the Saints which had started 4-0 for the first time in program history.

Khiry Shelton made a pass across the box to Small who fired a shot underneath the crossbar. His second goal of the year gave Oregon State (4-1) the lead just 1:52 into the contest.

The remainder of the match was evenly played between two squads which both entered the week receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Top-25 Poll. The Beavers held a slim 12-11 edge in shots, while the Saints (4-1) harbored a 10-3 advantage in corners.

Uros Antic and Nathan Olukanmi led Siena with three shots apiece and Josh Weiss made two saves for the Saints which also lost by an identical 1-0 score to the Beavers in their only other ever meeting against a Pac-12 foe back in 2002.

Matt Bersano made three saves for Oregon State to post the shutout and improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Saints conclude tournament play Sunday against Portland. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. local time) at Ronaldo Field at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
