IRVINE, Calif. – The 17th-ranked Oregon State women’s soccer team bounced back after its first loss of the season Friday night with a decisive 3-0 shutout of UC Riverside Sunday morning at the Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
“It was kind of a taxing day today,” Oregon State women’s soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the 3-0 shutout over UC Riverside. “We held our composure and stuck to the game plan. When we got our chances we capitalized and put the ball away.”
The Beavers (6-1-1) seemed to control the game against the Highlanders (1-7-2) Sunday morning. The Beavers outshot their opponent 16-to-4 in the game with nine shots coming on goal. Nine of the total 16 shots in the game for the Beavers came in the second half, as did all three of their goals.
The first goal of the day came from freshman Erin Uchacz who headed the ball in following a free kick by senior Courtney Wetzel in the 70th minute. It was Uchecz’s second goal of the season and Wetzel’s team leading fifth assist of the year.
Wetzel got her first goal of the season a little over five minutes later, in the 75th minute, when she followed up on an Jenna Richardson shot that rebounded to Wetzel who knocked it in giving the Beavers a 2-0 advantage.
Oregon State improved its advantage to 3-0 when Chelsea Buckland followed up on a shot another shot by Richardson and knocked it in for her fourth goal of the season. Buckland is now tied with junior Melinda Ingalls for the team lead in goals.
The Beavers took second at the Anteater Invitational with three points on the weekend. Following the final game of the weekend an all-tournament team was selected. Selected to the all-tournament team from Oregon State were keeper Colleen Boyd along with defender Milan Cabrera and midfielder Melinda Ingalls.
“It was a good weekend for us,” Rhode said. “It’s always good to finish with a win on the road like this. We learned a lot about ourselves. Now we’re going to go home and get ready for next weekend.”
The Beavers travel to Utah next weekend where they will take on Weber State in Ogden, Utah Friday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. PT and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Oct. 3 starting at 11 a.m. PT.
