Quinnipiac Eliminates Saints

November 6, 2013

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Machel Baker blasted home the game-winning golden goal in the 108th minute as Quinnipiac rallied past Siena Soccer 2-1 in double overtime. With the loss, the Saints were eliminated from MAAC Tournament contention.

Needing to win its final two matches and get some help in order to secure the fourth and final MAAC Tournament spot still up for grabs, the Saints (7-9-1, 3-5-1) got off to a quick start. Siena out-shot Quinnipiac (8-4-5, 6-1-2) 7-3 in the first half and took three corners.

The results paid off in the 40th minute as sophomore back Matt O’Brien – making his first start of the season – became the 13th different Saint to tally a goal. James Beeston played a corner to the top of the box to an unmarked Alex Portela. The freshman fired a shot in traffic that made its way through and was deflected just inside the near post by O’Brien.

Quinnipiac picked up the pace in the second half and netted the equalizer in the 70th minute. Sam Nicol played in a cross from the right on to the head of an in-stride Ola Ogunjobi who flicked it in.

Both teams each had a quality chance in double overtime, but Simon Hinde’s blast was smothered by Adam Myers and Matt Hemsley’s header was corralled by Borja Angoitia. The Bobcats made good on their next chance however as an odd man rush let a streaking Baker in down the left side for the decisive goal.

Myers made five saves for Siena which will miss the MAAC Tournament for the first time since 2009. Angoitia stopped seven shots for Quinnipiac which had already clinched a postseason berth over the weekend.

The Saints put a bow on their 2013 season Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Saint Peter’s.
