Rangers Edge Out 3-2 Win in RMAC Opener

September 19, 2014

Denver, Colorado: The Regis University men’s soccer team edged out a 3-2 victory over the visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves.  Tonight’s game was the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match-up for both squads.  The Rangers advance to 3-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

RU was put on their heels early in the 2nd minute of play when the Thunderwolves’ Zach Davis found the back of the net.  “Once we got over the shock of the goal we began to calm down,” stated head coach Tony McCall.  Regis calmed the nerves and sank into possession play and began forming some offensive momentum.  Senior midfielder Arnthor Kristinsson (Arkanes, Iceland) evened the score with an impressive header off a cross from the left side from senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Ireland).

Maybin added to the scoring in the 27th minute as he drilled a shot from 25 yards out past the Thunderwolves goalkeeper.  That goal gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Play in the second half began to get more competitive as CSU-Pueblo was in search of the tying goal but before that could happen; Maybin struck again in the 77th minute, scoring his second goal of the match finishing a cross from junior midfielder Adam Tormoehlen (Highlands Ranch, Colorado).

The Thunderwolves never stopped fighting looking for an opportunity to get back into the game and they found it in the 88th minute off a rebound save from Ranger goalkeeper Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington).  With CSU-P only a score away from the tying goal, the Rangers locked down defensively and closed the game out.  “We need to do a better job of starting off quicker and protecting our goal a little better early in the game,” explained McCall.

Junior goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) started the game and made two saves in his 45 minutes of action.  Adkisson subbed in at the start of the second half and recorded two saves.

The Rangers slightly outshot the Thunderwolves 17-15 with twelve being on goal.  CSU-P won the corner kick advantage 5-4.

RU is back in action on the road at Metropolitan State University of Denver on Sunday, September 21st at 2:30 p.m.
