Rangers Win in Overtime Thriller

October 19, 2014

Denver, Colorado: A thrilling overtime victory for the Regis University Ranger men’s soccer team Sunday afternoon against the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks (8-6, 6-4 RMAC).  In a heated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match the Rangers found a way to earn a 2-1 win, “It is a tough league and you are playing against good teams that are coached well and I thought Fort Lewis played really well today,” stated head coach Tony McCall.

The Skyhawks won the shot advantage 19-6 but a consistent Ranger defensive line and stellar goalkeeping allowed RU to stay in the game and eventually find the game-winner just minutes into overtime.  Junior midfielder Jacob Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colorado) found the back of the net early in the 8th minute to give the Rangers a one-goal lead.  He struck the ball from just outside the 18-yard box past the Fort Lewis goalkeeper.  Senior midfielder Arnthor Kristinsson (Akranes, Iceland) tallied the assist on the play.

The Skyhawks found the equalizer in the 54th minute scoring a header from a cross.  Play between the squads began to escalate as the match went on in search of the game-winner.  Sophomore goalkeeper Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) had an unbelievable performance between the posts in the second half to keep Fort Lewis from earning the result.  The Skyhawks were awarded a penalty kick in the 79th minute of play but Adkisson made a diving save to keep the score tied at 1-1.

The game headed into overtime and it was junior midfielder Ryan Urwiller (Broomfield, Colorado) that scored the game-winning goal by being in the right place at the right time.  The play originated from a corner kick taken by senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland).  He placed a ball into the far post side of the box where Kristinsson headed it back across the goal, from there sophomore defender Louis Barrow (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) used his head to keep it alive and redirect the ball towards the goal.  Urwiller was there for the finish scoring his third goal of the season, his second game-winner.

“We were under pressure for long periods but good teams find ways to win,” said McCall.  Junior goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi started the match and made two saves facing nine shots.  Adkisson subbed in at halftime to make six saves to keep the Rangers in the game and faced ten shots.

Regis is on the road next to UC-Colorado Springs on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
