Santa Clara Battles To Scoreless Tie With Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - In another close game,Santa Clara (3-0-2) battledOregon (4-0-1) to a 0-0 draw. The tie wasSanta Clara's second tie on the weekend, with the first coming againstOregonState on Fri. by a score of 2-2.

Despite the scoreless final, both teams had chances to score throughout the game.Santa Clarafreshman Sophia Huerta received the first scoring chance in the fifth minute when she knocked a header wide left. Minutes laterOregonresponded when Kelsey Foo took a shot of her own that missed the net wide left.

Sophia Huerta was the leader for the Broncos with five shots on the afternoon but two other players put three shots on goal each. Sarah Jackson had shots saved in the 10th, 18th and 26th minutes by Ducks' goalie Abby Steele. Lauren Matheson added shots on goal in the 27th, 49th and 88th minutes but was unable to put the Broncos ahead.

The Broncos were on the attack in the first half, posting 11 shots toOregon's three.Santa Clarakept the Ducks from putting a shot on goal until the second half.

All-American Bianca Henninger posted three saves to help keep the game scoreless. Her first save came on a shot from Ryann Davie in the 49th minute. The Ducks added shots on goal in the 60th and 84th minutes but Henninger denied both chances.

Neither team put a shot on goal in two overtime periods and the game ended in a scoreless tie. In the end,Santa ClaraoutshotOregon15-9.

The Broncos next play in the Stanford-Nike Invitational on Fri., Sept. 9 atStanfordUniversityinPalo Alto,Calif.against the #14 UC Irvine Anteaters (5-0-0).  On Sun., Sept. 11Santa Claraopens its home schedule against defending national champion #10 Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
