New Britain, Conn. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team gave a spirited effort in its season opener at Central Connecticut but couldn't find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss. Despite the loss, there were many positives to take away for head coach Ryan Anatol. Stony Brook dominated posession and had the more dangerous chances in the second half. 

Anatol's Reaction 

" I thought it was a good, competitive soccer game." commented Anatol. "We had the better of the possession and forced them to become very direct. Even though we created chances, we still need to become more dangerous in the final third."

Goal Recap

The only goal of the game came in the 53rd minute when Freddy Metellus beat redshirt freshman Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) with a low shot.

Highlights

After falling behind 1-0 Stony Brook had three golden chances to tie the match.

• The first quality chance came off the foot of sophomore Jorge Torres (Miami, Fla.). His dipping free kick beat the goalkeeper to the near post but ricoheted off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
• Senior Keith McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) had a chance to equalize when he was left unmarked on a corner kick but his header from eight yards out sailed high.
• Peraps the best Stony Brook chance came in the 82nd minute. Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) slid in behind the CCSU defense and lofted a nicely waited ball to the back post but a sliding Fernando Wadskier (Valencia, Venezuela) could't get a touch on the bal to redirect it into the vacant goal.

Game Notes
 

• CCSU outshot Stony Brook 13-8 for the game and held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
• The two teams combined for only seven first half shots but the game opened up in the second half and the teams combining for 14 attempts at goal.
• Wadskier led Stony Brook's offensive charge with three shots and two shots on goal.
• Playing in his first collegiate game, McMahon made five stops.
• Perhaps the most telling sign of the possession figures was the #Seawolves advantage in corner kicks, which finished at 8-3.

#The Seawolves have an opportunity to surprise the country when they head to Storrs, Conn. on Monday, Sep. 1 to face the no. 8 Connecticut Huskies. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
