NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University women’s soccer scored the first goal of the match but VCU scored two second half goals and hung on for a 2-1 win over the Lady Monarchs Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

VCU (5-2-3) had an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half but ODU keeper Laura Bush came up with five saves and it was ODU (2-7) to get on the board first courtesy of an Ashlee Coutu goal.

In the 42nd minute, Brooke Boland sent a throw-in into the box that Amber Cook headed toward the goal and Coutu headed it over VCU’s Kristin Carden to give ODU a 1-0 lead.  It was the second goal of the year for Coutu and the first assists of the season for Cook and Boland.

VCU had a great chance when Brianne Moore took a shot from 15 yards out but Bush made a diving save to her left to keep the Rams off the board.

ODU had a chance to get her the board in the 20th minute when Boland sent a pass to Coutu in the box but her shot was knocked away from Carden.

The Lady Monarchs took the 1-0 lead into the break but VCU got on the board in the 62nd minute on a long blast from Wendy Acosta that just went over the out-stretched arms of Bush to tie the score at one.

The Rams grabbed the lead in the 73rd minute as Alex Gogolin sent a shot off the cross bar with the rebound bouncing to Acosta who sent a shot into the right side of the net.

ODU had a chance in the 82nd minute when Hallie Rogers had a shot from 20 yards out that was blocked away by the VCU defense.

Acosta led VCU with seven shots while Courtney Conrad had six, Coutu led ODU with two shots.

Bush finished the day with five saves in goal for ODU while Carden had one for the Rams.

ODU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Towson to take on the Tigers at 4 p.m.
