Tulsa Captures 4-1 Win Over Houston

October 20, 2016

The Tulsa women’s soccer team captured a 4-1 win over Houston on Thursday night at the Carl Lewis Complex in Houston, Texas.  TU moved to 8-7-1 on the season and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while UH fell to 6-5-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the league.

“It was a good road win,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said.  “It is a tough place to play and we knew it was going to be a battle.  After the first 10 minutes we settled down, Rachel got a goal and we had the momentum, but we had the lightening delay and came back and gave up a goal.  This team has always played very well in the second half, so we knew we could come back out after halftime and play, and we did that.  We didn’t score the prettiest goals, but they came from hard work and players being in the right place at the right time.  It was nice to have all of our players back and healthy tonight because it was fun to play everyone.  The entire team played with a lot of heart and desire, and battled the entire game.”

Rachel Thun scored her ninth goal on the season as she dribbled around the Cougars’ defenders and shot into the lower 90 for the score at the 24:30 mark.

With 17:36 on the clock in the first frame, the game was suspended due to lightening for 30 minutes.  When play resumed, Desiree Bowen evened the score in the 33rd minute off an assist from Selena Peters.

Anna Williams gave Tulsa the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute off a combination from Thun and Amanda Creason, and then Christina Holmes added a score in the 70th minute off a pass from Tana Dake.  Thun scored her second goal of the contest in the 72nd minute, also on an assist from Drake, for the final score.

Tulsa had an 18-6 lead in shots, including a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams took two corner kicks.

Dake had a team-best four shots, while Thun, Williams and Holmes all had three attempts.  Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up four saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 23 against SMU.  Game time is set for 1:00 pm at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas.
