UC Irvine men defeat Sacramento State

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 16 UC Irvine men’s soccer team (5-2) defeated Sacramento State 2-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Anteater Stadium.

Senior Irving Garcia (San Luis, Ariz./Yavapai College) passed the ball to junior Spencer Thompson (Ahwatukee, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) who sent it back over to Garcia who put it in the net to give the ‘Eaters a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the match. In the 83rd minute, sophomore keeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) punted the ball past midfield to Thompson on a breakaway, with the Sacramento State keeper out of the box, Thompson got past the keeper and knocked it into the open net for a 2-0 UCI lead.

Fontein had seven saves for the ‘Eaters as he picked up his fourth shutout of the year. Keeper Ryan Kenny had two saves for the Hornets.

The ‘Eaters will travel to San Diego Friday to take on Princeton in a neutral site match at 1:30 p.m. at the San Diego State Sports Deck.
