UC Irvine women beat Gonzaga

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (12-6-2) defeated Gonzaga 2-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Anteater Stadium.
Senior Kate Berrini (Foster City/Notre Dame HS) got a great pass from freshman Jackie Samis (Trabuco Hills HS) in the 15th minute as Berrini found the back of the net giving UCI a 1-0 lead. Berrini would again score for UCI in the 85th minute as she dribbled around the box to the left side where she kicked the ball across the goal and into the right side of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kala Gabler (Apple Valley/Hope International) had eight saves as she earned her first career shutout at UCI. Keeper Amy Danielson had four saves for the ‘Zags.
The ‘Eaters ended the Big West season with a 4-3-1 record to put them into a three-way tie with Cal State Fullerton and Pacific for fourth place in the Big West. With tiebreakers, UC Irvine will advance to the Big West Tournament as the No. 4 seed. UCI will face No. 1 seed Cal Poly Thursday in the Big West Tournament semifinals. No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge will host No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara in the other semifinal Thursday.
