UMass men fall to George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to George Washington on Sunday afternoon in the squad's season finale. Andy Stadler posted a hat trick for the Colonials, who improved to 10-8-0 (4-5-0 A-10), while the Minutemen close out 2009 at 7-7-3 and 4-5-0 in conference play.

Stadler gave George Washington a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute as he knocked down a long service in the box and sent it home for his 11th of the season. Nikolay Aleksandrov and Mike Rollings picked up assists on the play.

The Minutemen held a 7-6 shot advantage at the intermission, despite the one-goal deficit. However in the second half, the Colonials were able to put the match away after a red card was issued to Chris Roswess in the 74th minute, forcing UMass to play with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Shortly after Roswess was sent off, Stadler added his second goal of the day at 79:40. Rollings sent a pass to Yoni Berhanu who fed a through ball to Stadler at the top of the box. Stadler then finished the play with a shot into the right side of the net.

His third tally came off a turnover by the Minutemen. Stadler converted Mattia Melillo's pass at 86:32 to give George Washington the 3-0 edge.

The Colonials out-shot UMass 14-11 on the afternoon and led in corner kicks, 5-3. Shane Curran-Hays and Chris Piekos split time in net for the Minutemen. Curran-Hays had one save in the first half, while Piekos stopped four in the second. Brendan Lafferty recorded four saves for GW.

A total of nine cards were issued in the match (five UMass, four GW) and fouls were 15-9 against the Colonials.
