BALTIMORE- UMBC junior forward Pete Caringi (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) smashed career highs with three goals and two assists as the Retrievers exploded for five goals in a 5-1 victory over Boston University in front of 1,444 fans during Homecoming Festivities at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC (6-4-4, 1-2-1) earned a huge America East Conference victory after three prior disappointing results. The Terriers saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped and they slid to 4-6-4, 1-1-2.

The five goals were the most that UMBC has scored since the opening game of the 2010 season in a 5-3 victory over VMI and tied the team record for goals in an America East game.

“It was phenomenal,” head coach Pete Caringi said of the outburst. “We have had a lot of chances, but today, we finished those chances.”

Freshman midfielder Michael Burgos (Huntingtown, Md./The Calverton School) scored his first two collegiate goals, scoring first and last for the Retrievers.

Burgos scored the lone goal of the first half, netting a tough finish in the 36^th minute. Caringi came down the right wing and centered a pass to senior midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily Carr), who dished to Burgos streaking down the left alley. Burgos’ left-footed shot from 11 yards out beat Terrier netminder Nick Thomson just low and just inside the near post.

The two teams combined for five goals in less than 14 minutes in the second half and UMBC would capitalize on two of its nine second-half corners for goals. Caringi netted the first in the 60’, as junior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md/McDonogh) took the right side corner and sophomore linemate Michael DiCesare (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSale) outdueled Thomson to get a head on the ball. The loose change came to Caringi who booted it in from close range.

Boston’s Parker Powell gave the visitors hope when he headed in a Cameron Souri cross in the 67’ to cut the deficit to 2-1, but UMBC would exploded for three scores in a span of 5:10 to put the game away.

Caringi scored his second goal of the game, heading in another Kansaye corner at the 68:38 mark. He then completed his hat trick at 72:33, when sophomore midfielder Stephen Ho (North Potomac, Md./Wootten) got free on the right side and found Caringi all alone in the center of the box. Caringi converted from ten yards away into an unguarded net.

Senior back Liam Paddock (Worcesershire, England) initiated the final goal off a free kick from midfield. Caringi headed down his serve to a wide-open Burgos, who finished with a header from eight yards out.

Caringi’s eight-point performance was UMBC’s first since Ted Lawler scored four goals vs. UMES in 1995.

UMBC outshot Boston U., 17-5 and took 10 corners to a pair for the visitors. Thomson made six saves and allowed all five Retriever scores in 75 minutes of action. UMBC junor netminder Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made one only save to earn the victory for the hosts.

UMBC’s last five-goal effort in league play occurred vs. Albany in 2009.

The Retrievers travel to Annapolis to face Navy in the final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
