UNC Wilmington men lose to ODU

October 10, 2010

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Alex Vaughan’s second goal of the season lifted Old Dominion to a 1-0 win over UNCW as the Monarchs snapped the Seahawks 14-game Colonial Athletic Association unbeaten streak on Saturday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Monarchs improved to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 7-4 and 3-1. UNCW dropped into second-place tie behind William & Mary, who shutout George Mason, 2-0, in Fairfax, Va. The Seahawks are tied with VCU, who tied visiting Hofstra, 1-1.
ODU raced out the gate early rattling off the first five shots of the game with Vaughan scoring on a tough angle shot in the 13th minute. The play started with him taking a corner kick and playing a short pass that was deflected back to him. Vaughan then cut past his defender towards the end line where he penetrated the defense and snuck his shut inside the near post.

In the 34th minute, UNCW nearly tied the match when senior Allen Lomax sent a low-lining cross into the box that skipped past ODU goalkeeper Evan Newton, but senior Devon Carroll’s shot sailed wide right.

Newton and the Monarchs were able to hold off the Seahawks in the second half as UNCW came alive, building an 8-4 shot advantage in the half.
Newton would finish with two saves, both in the second half. The first save came on a 20-yard strike by sophomore Thomas Driver in the 67th minute and he followed with a diving deflection on a buckling shot by senior Tyler Clare in the 74th minute.

The Seahawks close out their three-game homestand on Oct. 13 with a 7 p.m. start against Georgia State.
