Vandals Look to Tame Cougars

August 30, 2013

MOSCOW, Idaho—The early season schedule for the Idaho Vandals women’s soccer team brings them as close to home as they can get without playing on Guy Wicks Field on Friday. Idaho will make the short trek over to the Lower Soccer Field on the campus of Washington State to take on the Cougars at 3:00 p.m. PT.

The Vandals hope to gain the offensive momentum early at Washington State. In their two games at Weber State and at Idaho State the Vandals have combined for a total of four shots on goal and nine shots total. Head coach Pete Showlerhas had a whole week to get his team prepared for Friday, and isn’t worried about any lack in confidence.

“We are in for one tough game,” Showler stated. “The girls are going to be prepared. To me it is a huge rivalry and if you cannot get up for a game like that then there is not many games you get up for. I know the girls will be well prepared and just chomping at the bit to get in there. Everything we work on is about competing. As long as we compete and improve every day we are heading in the right direction.”

In the opening two games for the Vandals, goalies Marina Siegl and Torell Stewart have split time in net. The sophomore Siegl, has started both games, substituting out for the freshman Stewart at the beginning of the second half. Both keepers have seen their share of action in the two games. In 90 minutes of play Siegl has turned away nine shots, while Stewart has secured seven saves in relief.

The Cougars control the all-time series, 8-1-0. Last season’s contest resulted in a 5-1 WSU victory. The Pac-12 school is 1-0-0 on the season, defeating Seattle U last Friday, 3-1.
