October 6, 2010
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest sophomore Andy Lubahn scored his fourth goal of the season and redshirt senior Akira Fitzgerald earned his second straight shutout to lead the Demon Deacons to a 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium.

With the win, Wake Forest improves its record to 5-4-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers are now 4-4-2.

Wake Forest tallied the only goal of the night early in the contest as Lubahn finished a cross from Kyle Emerson in the sixth minute for his fourth goal of the season.

Emerson found the scoresheet for the second straight match. After scoring a goal in Wake’s win against Virginia Tech on Friday, Emerson recorded his first collegiate assist on Tuesday night.

Fitzgerald recorded his second consecutive shutout and his third clean sheet of the season. The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award candidate made four saves over the 90 minutes. With the 90 minutes played in Tuesday’s game, Fitzgerald moved into third in Wake Forest history in minutes played at 5,462. He now ranks seventh in school history with 195 saves over his four-year career.

Collin Taylor played well in goal for the Mountaineers, but suffered the loss. Taylor gave up one goal and made three saves in the contest.

Appalachian State held a slim 9-8 edge in shots, while shots on frame were even at four apiece. The Deacs had five corner kicks, while the Mountaineers had four corner opportunities.

For the second straight game, Wake Forest wasted little time scoring, taking an early lead in the sixth minute. Emerson dribbled to the left side of the 18-yard box and played a cross to Lubahn, who side volleyed a shot into the net from five yards out to put the Deacs on top 1-0.

Appalachian State had its best chance of the opening 45 minutes in the 34th minute. Chad Dalton had an attempt from just outside the penalty area that hit the crossbar. The rebound went right to Sean Dreybus, whose header was saved by Fitzgerald and went out of play for a corner kick.

The Deacs had an early opportunity in the second half as Emerson had a look on frame in the 53rd minute that was saved by Taylor and went out for a corner kick.

The Mountaineers had a chance to equalize in the 59th minute on a shot from distance by Steven Sassano. Sassano’s shot from well outside the penalty area was saved by Fitzgerald near the right post.

Lee Williams had a late chance to tie the score in the 84th minute, but his header went right to Fitzgerald as the senior goalkeeper made his fourth save of the night.

Wake Forest hits the road on Friday, traveling to Chapel Hill for a pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference match against No. 2 North Carolina. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
